recepticle=faq / walkthrough for peasant's quest, videlectrix, 1982
written by lawrie malen // www.indextwo.net
i wrote this after playing peasant's quest last night. it's the hardest game i've had to play since monkey island.
=============================================
after the intro, you'll find yourself standing at the foot of a cliff with a guard... guarding it.
> talk man
he'll tell you you don't smell like a peasant, don't dress like a peasant, and you're not on fire like a peasant. you need to achieve these three things before you can progress up the cliff face. let's go.
walk down to the next screen, where you're outside the inn. there's a note on the door.
> read note
the owner has clearly gone fishin'. go left to the next screen, and you'll find him in a boat on the lake.
> talk man
he wants bait. walk down to the next screen, where you'll find a thatched cottage surrounded by four bushes.
> open door
> talk baby lady
she tells you about her riches stolen by the jhonka that she wants back.
> look shelf
> get feed
> ask about jhonka
walk to the right and down to leave the cottage. the baby lady will tell you to hunt in the yard for something the baby lost. out in the yard, walk to one of the bushes.
> get berries
you'll find nothing but squished berries. you need to walk to each bush in turn and > get berries. in the fourth bush you try, you'll find a trinket. walk down to the next screen, then left to the screen after that, where you'll find a well.
> look well
> turn crank
you need something heavy for the bucket. walk down the next screen, where you'll find an archery range, and an archer behind a desk.
> talk man
he'll tell you about an argument with his brother, and if you see him, tell him 'haldo'. now walk down to the next screen, where you'll see half a lake with a sandy shore.
> look shore
> get pebbles
when you try and get the pebbles, it might say that you can't reach. this is a little buggy, so just wander around to different parts of the screen somewhere around the lake and keep trying 'get pebbles' until he actually picks them up. now walk up to the next screen, past the archery range, and up again to the screen with the well.
> put pebbles in bucket
> turn crank
you now have a monster maskus. now walk back down to the archery, then left, over a cracked and dry puddle, left again until you reach the bale of hay, then go up to the field with 'poor gary', the horse in it.
> look horse
> wear mask
you've now freaked out poor gary who has broken through the fence. walk left through the fence, where you'll find an archer firing arrows into a tree.
> talk man
he mumbles, mentioning mendelev, who was the other archer.
> say haldo
after getting the message, the archer wanders off.
> get arrow
now walk right out of the little hidden grove, down into the field with the bale of hay, then right until you get to the archery range.
> talk archers
> give trinket
you're now about to play the archery game to try and win the supertime funbow. this is fairly simple, but it can't hurt to have some tips:
the wind factor is the key in this game. and you basically have six states: blowing left hard, blowing left (not so hard), not blowing, blowing right (not so hard) and blowing right hard. the other main factor is the little meter on the right. hit space once and both arrows will go up; hit space again to stop the left arrow on the red line (or as close to as possible), the right arrow will go all the way up, then bounce back down. you want to try and get the right arrow dead on the red line too.
if the wind is not blowing, just position your arrow dead centre, then hit space, aiming to get both little black arrows on the red line.
if the wind is blowing left or right (not so hard), position your arrow dead on with the outer part of the INNER white circle; if the wind is blowing left, your arrow needs to be on the right, and vice versa. then hit space, aiming to get your arrows dead on the red line.
if the wind is blowing hard left or hard right, you need to position your arrow so that the side of the bow closest to the edge of the screen is about a single text character's width from the edge (the tip of the arrow will line up to be slightly inside the outer white circle). again, you're trying to get both little black arrows on the meter to hit the red line dead one. this is the trickiest shot to do.
as long as you get three bullseyes, you win the supertime funbow. if you don't win first time, don't worry; the brothers will tell you that you can have as many free goes as you like. to do this, just type
> play
and try and get those three bullies. now, walk down to the screen with half a lake and the sandy shore, then left, where you'll find your burninated cottage.
> look cottage
> get paper
you now have a map of the peasant land of peasantry. you can actually come here at any point in the game and get the map, but i forgot about it until just now. you don't actually need it, since i'm telling you where to go. you cheat. go left, and you'll be outside the jhonka's cave (remember the jhonka? he has all of the baby lady's riches). there's a note on the door.
> read note
the jhonka won't come out because he's scared of the kerrek. and with good reason. what the crap is the kerrek? so far, you've avoided him via my selective directions. now, go left back to your burninated cottage, walk up through the screen with the cracked and dry puddle, and STOP (just hit enter). if you walk up to the next screen, there's a pretty good chance you'll find the kerrek there. if you go unprepared, there's a pretty good chance the kerrek will kill you in seconds. type in
> kill kerrek
but do NOT press enter. hit the up key and be very prepared to hit 'enter', because if the kerrek is on the next screen, he'll be close enough for you to kill him. you shoot an arrow into his heart and kill him. now it's raining.
> look kerrek
> get buckle
you are now wearing the stinky kerrek's belt buckle. you've just achieved one part of the criteria; you smell like a peasant! huzzah! now walk down to the screen with the formerly dry and cracked puddle, which is now a sticky mud puddle. walk across it, and you'll slip over and get covered in mud. now walk left to the screen with the bale of hay, then walk down to jhonka's cave. you'll see him dancing outside next to his pile of riches, but there's no way you can steal them without him noticing, and no way you can kill him. walk back up to the field with the bale of hay.
> jump in hay
you're now wearing the bale of hay. walk back down to jhonka's cave. that idiot jhonka doesn't notice you!
> get riches
at this moment, a gust of wind blows all the hay and mud off you, and the jhonka asks if you took his riches.
> no
sweet! you just got away with it. now walk down to the other small cottage. try opening the door, pushing it pulling it; it makes no difference, because you can't open the door.
> look cottage
hmm... shoddy stonework?
> push stone
now there's a hole, but still no way to get inside the cottage. walk right, past the wavy tree. a naked man may appear, called 'naked ned'. if he does, stop and say
> speak ned
keep walking right, past the tall tree until you get to the baby lady's cottage.
> open door
> give riches
the baby lady disappears, taking the riches and leaving you the baby. leave the cottage, and keep walking left until you get back to the other cottage with the door you can't open. remember that small hole that you can't get through?
> put baby in hole
now the q-baby has opened the cottage door, you can just walk right on in, where you find a dresser.
> look dresser
> open dresser
> get robe
> wear robe
two thirds of the peasant criteria are met: you now look like a peasant, (as it happens, you're wearing naked ned's robes) leave the cottage and walk right for a long time until you get to the burninated tree.
> look lantern
interesting, but there's nothing right now. walk up to the inn, then left to the lake. just for a quick refresh,
> talk man
remember the chicken feed you stole from the baby lady right at the start?
> throw feed
now go right, back to the inn.
> open door
once inside:
> look
> open door
you can't open the pantry door, so
> talk man
he'll suggest you should get room. that's exactly what you should do.
> get a room
you'll go to sleep, but wake up in the middle of the night, and the pantry is now open.
> look pantry
> get pot
you go to grab the big black pot of horse grease, and it falls on your head. you now have completely screwy controls, and have to navigate to the doorway before the crotchety old man comes back. this is an exercise in annoyance. i'm not entirely sure if it's the same every time, but both times i played, the controls were like this:
left = down
up = right
right = up
down = left
once you get out, you pull the pot off your head and find yourself covered in flammable horse grease. this is good. walk down to the burninated tree, and walk through the now-lit lantern. huzzah! you're on fire. you're now a fully qualified peasant! time to get down to vanquishing trogdor the burninator. walk up, past the inn and up again until you reach the guard at the foot of the cliff.
> talk man
you can now pass! walk up the path, where you will find yourself at the foot of the cliff. as soon as you start climbing, rocks are going to start falling. my best advice is to get way over on the right-hand side as soon as you start climbing, since rocks hardly ever fall way over there.
> climb
i guarantee you'll die at least a couple of times, but perseverence is the key, and god bless the autosave. once you reach the top of the cliff, you'll be at the entrance to trogdor's cave. walk in and you'll see three dark caves on a higher level, with a beaded curtain over the entrance. start to walk left, and one of the three keepers of trogdor will walk out and tell you that only they hold the trog-helmet, trog-shield and trog-sword. you need to answer three trog-trivia questions correcty; these are all based on your observation of the game. below are the answers to all the questions; each keeper has three questions which are chosen at random. only read them for a severe spoiler. after answering a question correctly, walk left until the next keeper stops you.
keeper one's answers:
the only creature the jhonka fears is the kerrek.
mendelev had you tell dongolev 'haldo'.
at the archery game, you won a supertime funbow.
keeper two's answers:
there are actually five berry bushes in the peasant land of peasantry.
the innkeeper's pantry was full of 'old man rub'.
the letter 'c' is... the letter 'c'. which is to say, answer 'b'. yes? just type 'b'.
keeper three's answers: (keeper three is a sly little devil with very hard trog-trivia questions)
the leaves that grow on the tree by the well are orange.
the river that runs through peasantry runs from northeast to southwest.
your robes originally belonged to naked ned.
after answering all three question correctly, the beaded curtain parts, where you can enter into trogdor's lair. you'll notice that you are now very tiny, because trogdor is so very huge. once you're inside, you'll stop just inside the cave entrance. DO NOT WALK TOWARDS TROGDOR! he will burninate you instantly, with no mercy. but you have the trog-sword, remember?
> throw sword
you hurl the sword at trogdor, where it jabs him in the belly and wakes him up. he's not too put out, and certainly doesn't seem to be dying. crap. you've now got about three moves before you're going to get the everloving crap burninated out of you.
> talk trogdor
that's right - trogdor can't be killed. but, on the plus side, you did your absolutely best. you got burninated, but at least there's a statue of you. congratulations! you just won peasant's quest!
